Yellow-and-black, aggressive, ground-nesting or wall voids, sting repeatedly. Peak August–October — most dangerous for outdoor activities.
Paper Wasps
Slim, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves and soffits. Less aggressive than yellow jackets.
Bald-Faced Hornets
Large 3/4 inch, black with white face. Giant grey football-shaped nests in trees or eaves, aggressive when threatened — the signature late-summer scary nest in Portland-metro yards.
Mud Daubers
Thin, small mud tubes on sheltered walls. Mostly harmless, removed on request.
